You will first learn about your tools. You’ll experiment with several surfaces, from absorbent watercolor paper to sleek, synthetic Yupo sheets, whether your work with vivid alcohol inks or rich India ink. These early classes expose you to the basic wonder of seeing ink flow and interact with air, alcohol, or water. One puff or dab might send colors blossoming in rather fresh ways.
This course stresses joyful investigation instead of rigid technique adherence. You will learn to drop, splash, and tilt the paper so that gravity and wetness do some of the work for you. Those small surprises—backflows, bleeding edges, or odd blooms—become characteristics rather than defects. Errors are invitations to attempt something else; they are not things to correct.
Your instructor will live show many sessions where she responds to every ink movement in real time. You might hear, “Let’s add more here—oh, that got wild. Great! These times enable you to release strict expectations and learn to work with the ink, viewing it as a creative collaborator rather than a tool for control.
Growing more self-assured will cause you to start experimenting with depth and contrast and layering transparent colors. Always listening to what the ink wants to do, you will use tissue to elevate highlights or softly brush regions to guide the flow. You will learn over time when to guide the medium and when to let it run.
